Colour Retention- LIPSTICKS/ Foundations/shadows/blush

  • Throughout history, individuals have employed color cosmetics as a means of improving their appearance by introducing preferred hues to their faces.
  • The endurance of a product is gauged by its ability to maintain a lasting presence over time.
  • Given that color cosmetics, particularly lipsticks, are renowned for their pigmentation, they can be assessed simply by observing whether the color is present or absent.
  • Colorimetry serves as a scientific methodology for measuring color, employing diverse models to represent colors numerically.

Colour Delivery and Longevity

The assessments can be performed for any colour for a defined period:

  • Immediate- deliverable
  • Kinetic- for longevity

Water Proof

Water Immersion Test

Method Reference

  • Waterproof pertains to products that resist being washed away by water.
  • These are products that remain intact even after rinsing with water.
  • This category denotes a class of enduring products.
  • This terminology is frequently coupled with “sweat-proof,” indicating resistance to wear caused by perspiration.

Water Immersion Test

  • The method includes the application of products on the inner forearm and immersion in the water maintained around 280C in a whirlpool tub for a total of 40 minutes.
  • The arm is immersed in water for 2 cycles of 20 minutes each.
  • The measurements are taken at baseline (clean skin), after product application and after immersion for 40 minutes.

Splash Proof or Water Resistance

The assessment is conducted both before and after a controlled face wash. The product’s retention or its effects are utilized to assess its water resistance property, similar to the methodology employed in the waterproof test using the immersion technique.

Smudge Proof

Curling and Volume

Curling and Volume

Splash Proof or Water Resistance

  • The curl angle gives a very impressive representation of mascara quality
  • It can be used for immediate deliverable as well as styling hold for X hours

Make-Up remover

Efficacy of make-up removers

  • Evaluating the makeup transferred onto makeup wipes from the face.
  • This assessment can involve combining pads with liquid makeup removers, or it can be conducted after rinsing or using alternative formats of makeup removers.
  • Scientific analysis can be employed to quantitatively measure the makeup present on the pads.

Non-transferable- Lipsticks/ Foundations etc

Non-transferable

Make-up that does not transfer easily. E.g. Foundations that do not stain clothes, lipsticks that do not leave a mark on the cups

  • Using standard white paper cups.
  • Images are done and the extent of transfer is measurable.
  • It can also be a part of consumer sensorial test
  • Foundations, transfer the tissue with a gentle wipe. To maintain the pressure, it is performed by same person.
  • Extent of transfer is measurable.

Sensory Study

  • Aligned with FDA and ASTM guidelines
  • Assessment by qualified panel of consumers or trained evaluator
  • Paired, Triangle and Duo-Trio Test
  • Sensory spectrum, QDA
